The Building Code

I believe that structure is important. That means dependability; load bearing. These are fundamentals of building and engineering. They’re true in our physical world and spiritually for a relationship of any kind.

We adjust as things settle. Cracks form and things that were perfectly level at the beginning have a decline. Just as strict parents are softer grandparents, things we build have their prime and fade. Aged shells that are abandoned. Like a faulty mind cared for by assisted living. A protected property watched over by a historical society.

Housing empty memories. Perhaps shelter for the homeless and unwanted. Refuge; inadvertent philanthropy. Ideas compose the framework of the structures we erect. Wearing hard hats as engineering ideas clash along the way. Hoping the finished collaboration stands the test of time.

The tallest of these ideas. The biggest and broadest structures have lightening rods. Just as they are; targets for all sort of judgment and fanfare. The strikes find their way to the ground below… As the purpose of the protective device is to remain grounded. Preventing shock or harm.

People form just the same. Our educators and activities. Developing our intelligence, muscle memory, and morals. These are the framework that may keep us steady. Without these integral pieces to carry the weight of our lives we will collapse. Perhaps under circumstances anyone can fall.

Individuals decide which ideas will be their cornerstones. Our dependability comes from that foundation. Life’s battles will draw the ire of conflict. Will our roots be deep enough? Perhaps the places and choices we’ve made to build our stand upon, may weather through any and all.

A changing world may require us to reinvent our thinking processes. To renovate within. No matter how lavish or mediocre our lives become, there is a duty to the community around us. A communicative society. One which will change the building codes. Leaving outdated ideas and methods in the past. Old ways, but now we know better.

Guarding ourselves from incivility. Choices that provoke thought, rather than casting degradation. Being able to turn our heads… And see our shadows. Personal beliefs; part of a neighborhood. Growing to something more… Fundamentals from which we can all learn to carry our responsibility.

Not without independence. Having the ability to sit-down and take a load off. Sharing with others who share the same environment. Where things aren’t so heavy. Being able to speak freely. Without judgment.

Giving one another the freedom to push the skylines. Thinking aloud, before returning to work inside. Imagineering precedes any final choices. Sharing with those around us, then making solitary plans. From the nursery rhymes of our youth… Bows breaking, cradles falling… to the testimony of our lives. Each of us is accountable for the gravity of decisions.
