The Venetians
Centuries ago, they brought back the window dressings from Persia.
Perhaps the world is now blind to Venice. The history washing away… A place richly
noted for people and history.
Current events happen to fast to
catalogue. The past forgotten in all the upgrades. Sustainability was never an
issue a millennium ago. Mankind pressing through expressionism and expanding culture.
Wonderful structures and doctrines clearly stating individual discipline. Assimilation
is a suggestion in our time. Years past meant risking sacrificing one’s self to
dissent.
The extra voices of today have been given irrevocable and boundless access.
Drowning out the reason and hierarchy which brought peace. Though it would be
challenged. Despite the fighting which proceeded the respite.
Formerly, cultures sought to protect
their ideals and fought to conquer. The bloodshed and collateral damage left
ecosystems and populations in balance. An overwhelming number of people have
saturated the Earth. Heating up our planet. Overpacking a freezer will cause that
environment to change. Even mechanized temperature controls have limits.
The diversity of the planet simply repositions everything. Formerly ice, now taking
a different form. We forgot about these wonderful regions of the world in the
rush to be heard. Elements which now overwhelm and threaten us. So many things
for a cause, but nothing worth dying for. A tradition of war which lost its
market share decades ago. An ironic curse of trying to live with one another in
an environment which will not allow it.
Science doesn’t have an answer today, nor will it ever. The simplicity of elements,
numbers, and ecology will destroy the quality of life. There’s arguments and uprisings
about “elite” people. Rich folks. The “1%.” Consider that those figures would
be the comfortable number of people inhabiting the Earth in previous times.
Despite anything monetary or materialistic, climate dictates living conditions.
Population has a breaking point. We crossed it.
Climate will always topple the people. Never will that change. The folks who
helped revolutionize thought. Structures of timeless art and gold. Slowly being
lost like Atlantis into the sea. A world they helped to craft, now victim to
the voices for asylum and goodwill. Ecology speaking back at us. Moving chess pieces
to counter the human onslaught.
Information pours in about damaging words and violence. The nature of human beings.
This competitive species bound to our history. Despite the ignorance of letting
history burn and erode, our instincts will bring conflict. Like Venice our tolerant
nature will lose ground. Numbers will change.
Venice has been the place of fact and legend from the beginning. Today a world sadly
ignores the collective punishment given to our forefathers. A world who watched
the Cathedral of Notre Dame burn. Always seeking to find the Ark of Noah… Losing
precious visible treasures in a sea of people who are shouting the other
direction. Facts in the way of a good story.
Perhaps the city will be another lesson as the ocean rises. Storms surge and
fires burn. Another piece of history, one last time, as a city is victim to the
sea. Trivially, they are noted for blinds. El Dorado a myth of gold. Two cities
remembered with a murky view of details. Blinds are from Persia… The gold was
taken to El Dorado and traded for their salt. Our subjective values of gold
blinded us in the excursion of fact.
A sensitive world willing to trade out the old for the new and rewrite the
story. The abstract idea of truth manipulated for convenience. We will continue
to find a new way and lose our way home. A point of no return we crossed a long
time ago. This leaves me to mourn. For I would rather hold to the sanctity of
what was, than what never will be.
